Gov’t Using Huawei’s Facial Recognition Tech To Net Bobiwine Protesters

An investigative report by one of our senior journos has filed a report that an invasive surveillance system bought by the government last year from China’s telecoms giant Huawei is being used to crack down on protesters.

The software can be used to track car licencess and well as track social media activity. Now its widely believed that the technology is being used to track all Ugandans that were involved in riots that toook place recently. The police has so far arrested over 800 Ugandans and taken to Kitarya using the technology.

Notably, there was a gentleman thatt was captured beating up a police woman during bobiwine protests in Kampala.

However In the absence of any judicial oversight, there are concerns of backdoor access to the system for illegal facial recognition surveillance on potential targets and stifling of anti-regime politicians like Bovbiwine
